CPAS supports the Irish Heart Foundation

22/02/2017 Posted by Doreen Molloy - Communications Manager | Comments(0)

CPAS are delighted to launch our association with the Irish Heart Foundation, our primary charity of choice for 2017. With over 80% of heart disease and strokes preventable, we at CPAS feel that there are a number of initiatives we can undertake in conjunction with the Irish Heart Foundation, to promote healthy hearts and lifestyles in the construction sector.

Some of the main contributing factors to heart disease and strokes are:

Blood Pressure
High blood pressure (or hypertension) usually has no symptoms. If it’s not treated or kept under control, it is one of the major risk factors for heart disease and stroke. Treatment and detection is very possible but it starts with you.

Cholesterol
Cholesterol is a type of fat found in your blood. One of the best ways to prevent cardiovascular disease such as stroke, heart attack and angina is to keep your cholesterol at a healthy level.

Stress
Recognising and managing your stress will reduce your risk of heart disease and stroke.

Some things we can all do to reduce our risks are:

Quit Smoking
Smoking is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Stopping smoking is the single most important step you can take to live longer and it greatly reduces your risk of heart disease and stroke.

Healthy Eating
The key to healthy eating is to eat a wide variety of foods. Using the Food Pyramid as a guide will help make sure you get all the vitamins, minerals and goodness you need from your food.

Managing Salt Intake
Research shows that if you have too much salt in your diet, this can increase your blood pressure levels and therefore increase your risk of a heart attack or stroke.

Weight Loss
Losing weight reduces your risk of heart disease and stroke.

Be Active
Being active is good for your heart and your head. A regular bit of exercise improves your emotional and physical well-being. It also reduces your risk of high blood pressure, heart attack and stroke, as well as many other diseases.
